Just a friendly reminder that our field trip to The Arboretum at Flagstaff is just around the corner.Below is some pertinent information to help prepare for the upcoming adventure.We will be hiking on the grounds and collecting lichen specimens during our trip with the possibility of inclement weather. We will start the program at NPA for an hour presentation by the folks from The Arboretum and then we will travel to facility for some hands-on learning and field work. Destination: The Arboretum at Flagstaff
Nature of study trip:Learn about the “I’m Lichen It!” research project and the SEGA gardens
Departure time: Students are to report to homerooms at the regular meeting time at 8:00 a.m.
Expected time of return:3:00 p.m.
Mode of travel: school vans and rental vans
What students will need to bring:
1.Sack lunch w/drink.NO glass containers.
2.Appropriate clothing for the day. Dress in layers to prepare for quickly changing temperatures. Wear clothing appropriate for sitting on the ground.Clothing must follow school dress code.Free dress passes will not be accepted.
3.Raingear and a jacket depending on weather forecast.
4.Sunscreen and a hat.
5.Tennis shoes or other closed-toe walking/hiking shoe.We will be the grounds and doing field work.No flips flops, heels, sandals, etc!
6.Water bottle – one-liter minimum.
Student may also bring:
1.A backpack to carry water, snack and extra clothing.
2.Any necessary medications – “pod” leaders in each group will carry these.
3.Binoculars and/or camera (optional).
What not to bring into the park:
1.Cell phones, mp3 players, video games, or other electronic devices.Teachers or chaperones may have a cell phone for safety, but it must be turned off for the ranger program.
On Friday September 25th, the entire 7th grade will be participating in an all-day field trip to The Arboretum at Flagstaff to learn about the Southwest Experimental Garden Array (SEGA) and climate change.This will tie into a long-term research project that the students will be participating in this year in the science classroom – the I’m Lichen It! Project. This project entails studying lichen along an elevation gradient using the SEGA gardens. Students will be analyzing data from the gardens as well designing and conducting experiments in the classroom to learn more about climate change.
Students are to arrive at NPA at the normal time and report to their homeroom. There will be an hour presentation at NPA prior to embarking to The Arboretum.From there, we will spend the remainder of the day at The Arboretum until 2:30 when we will return to NPA for the 3:15 dismissal bell. There is a $7 fee per student to cover travel expenses, entrance and program fees. Please have money and the attached permission slip turned into Ms. Brown on or before Friday September 18th.Scholarships are available for those in need.
Lastly and most importantly, in order to pull this off, we are in need of several drivers/chaperones to drive the vans and a few personal vehicles to and from The Arboretum.Chaperones are needed to actively participate and monitor students throughout the day.If you are interested in driving and/or chaperoning, please fill out the form at the bottom and we will contact you regarding next steps.
